    FAQs

What colour worktops would work well in my kitchen?

Black or dark coloured worktops have often been the most popular options in recent years. Although, traditionally, darker colours work best in large rooms with lots of windows, they can be used to create drama in any size kitchen. It’s all about choosing complementary colours, installing the right lighting and perhaps opting for reflective surfaces to make the most of the natural light.

White worktops are also very popular right now, as they help to create a bright and welcoming space. They can also help to make kitchens appear larger. If you would prefer something a bit warmer but still want the benefits of a lighter kitchen, neutral tones like beige make a great option.

Grey is another trending kitchen colour. Choose light greys for an open feel or darker greys to add depth and luxury.

If neutral shades aren’t for you, we have a huge range of colourful worktop options, too. From eco-friendly greens to rich reds, we have every colour, texture, and finish imaginable.

    How are kitchen worktops fitted?

We measure and template your kitchen before we start making your solid surface worktops, to ensure the perfect fit when we install. Our dedicated team can take care of fitting for you, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

How high is a kitchen worktop?

There is no standard kitchen countertop height, but most kitchen worksurfaces are fitted at about 36 inches (91.4 cm) or 42 inches (106.7 cm) from floor level. We can tailor our products to fit your units and of course we can make necessary modifications for our disabled customers too.

Are solid surface worktops heat resistant?

The majority of kitchen worktops are heat resistant. Solid surface countertops are one of the most durable types of worktops on the market, as they have been specially engineered for optimal heat resistance compared to their natural stone or wood counterparts. They can tolerate temperatures of up to 160º C.

As always, it’s a good idea to protect your kitchen from damage using trivets and placemats where required.

How much do new kitchen worktops cost?

Kitchen worktops vary massively in price, depending on material, size and style requirements. Solid surface countertops are an affordable option despite providing a superior look to natural stone. If you’d like a free quote, simply call us or visit our showroom to speak to one of the team. You can also send us any plans or drawings you might already have if you wish to do so. We also offer a full range of laminate and wooden work surfaces to suit your particular preference and budget.

What are the best kitchen worktops?

The best kitchen worktops look good, last a long time and are easy to maintain. Solid surface countertops meet all of these criteria. There are so many solid surface colours, textures and finishes to choose from that our solid surface worktops are bound to meet your style needs. Moreover, as a durable, heat and stain-resistant choice that is incredibly easy to clean, our worktops are a great long-term investment too.

    What is a residential kitchen?

The term “residential kitchen” is simply a reference to household kitchens limited to personal or family use. It is used in contrast to the term "commercial kitchen”, which describes any cooking premises or facilities used to prepare food that will be served or sold to the public. Generally speaking, commercial kitchens will be laid out slightly differently to residential kitchens, because they are designed specifically for multiple cooks and stressful workflows. They are also likely to require multiple sinks, ovens and other facilities.

It is possible to use your home kitchen to prepare food to be served to the public in some cases. Nevertheless, we recommend doing some research to ensure you obtain any relevant food hygiene certificates and permits. It’s also advisable to start looking for a more purpose-built facility once you reach professional capacity. For those of you that occasionally dabble in baking for farmers’ markets or social events, however, a traditional residential kitchen design should be more than adequate.

Solid Surfacing Company makes bespoke solid surface worktops for both residential and commercial kitchens around the UK. Because solid surface worktops are non-porous, they are incredibly hygienic, making them ideal for food preparation. They also boast a myriad of additional benefits, such as customisable aesthetics and enhanced strength, allowing them to outperform natural stone in all respects.

If you are looking for inspiration for your own commercial or residential kitchen, why not visit our stunning showroom? Our lovely, approachable team would be more than happy to discuss your unique requirements with you, to help you pick a colour and design that would work perfectly with your chosen commercial or residential kitchen design.

What type of flooring is best for a kitchen? What type of flooring is best for a kitchen?

Kitchen flooring is an incredibly personal choice. More than just a matter of aesthetics, you’ll need to consider a range of practical factors, such as how easy your chosen material is to clean, how durable it is and how well it fits within your budget. For instance, you wouldn’t want a beige carpet in a food-prep area prone to many spills. Wipeable materials like laminate, wood and linoleum work best.

Of course, you’ll also want to make sure that the colour and texture you choose add to the aesthetics of your home, rather than competing with your kitchen worktops for attention. Generally speaking, we would recommend pairing darker flooring with lighter worktops, to ensure that there is enough light in your kitchen overall. Lighter flooring works well with both light and dark worktops, depending on the look you are going for.

In terms of kitchen flooring materials that are trending right now, herringbone patterns and warm terracotta-style tiles are currently very popular, as are sustainable materials with a lot of texture. If you do add texture in your flooring, you might like to contrast this with smooth, light-reflecting countertops, to ensure that you retain enough visual interest and don’t make your kitchen feel too closed in with lots of matte textures. Solid surface worktops are great in this respect, particularly as you can add visually-pleasing contrast between rougher, natural flooring and smooth, delicate worktop curves. In fact, thanks to the variety of colours, shades and finishes available, solid surface worktops work well with all types of kitchen flooring.

How much space do I need between my countertops and the bottom of my wall cabinets?

Wall cabinets are the kitchen cupboards fitted to the wall above the worktops. Experts recommend leaving at least 18 inches of space between the bottom of your wall cabinets and your worksurfaces, to ensure you have enough room to work, as well as enough light. If your ceilings are high enough, you can also opt to install your wall cabinets slightly higher up to maximise the amount of natural light available in your kitchen. Fitting under-cabinet lighting is another great way of brightening up your space, particularly when installed above light-reflective worktop materials like solid surface.

Where should I start with kitchen renovation?

Unless you are designing a new kitchen from scratch or want to completely overhaul the layout of your existing kitchen, we would recommend starting with your sinks, cabinets and worktops. It’s surprising what a difference painting your cabinet doors and getting new, professional worktops fitted can make to the overall look of your residential kitchen.

Solid surface worktops are a particularly great way to update things without breaking the bank. They look just as elegant as natural stone, but are fabricated from materials specifically designed to be more durable and long lasting, as well. What’s more, because they are thermoformable, your worktops can be joined together seamlessly and finished with delicate curved edges, adding finishing touches that you simply cannot achieve with other worktop materials.

Of course, once we have fitted your worktops, if you still want to achieve more, it’s easy to go about changing your cabinet doors, fitting a new sink in the gap we carefully made for you and even fitting new floors. Achieving the kitchen of your dreams doesn’t have to be expensive and it’s not always necessary to do everything at once.

How much does a new kitchen cost in 2023?

According to experts, a new residential kitchen could cost anything between £4000 and £25,000+. It all depends on the size of your kitchen and what you’re having done.

Luckily, it is possible to upgrade your kitchen at a more budget-friendly price. Our solid surface worktops, which are custom cut in your preferred design, texture and colour, can completely transform the look of your residential kitchen without breaking the bank. What better way to bring affordable, made-to-measure luxury into your home?

What adds the most value to a kitchen?

Often considered the heart of the home, your kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your house. As such, if you’re looking for ways to add value to your property, your kitchen is a great place to start. There are many ways in which you can increase your kitchen’s value. Here are our top ten:

    1. Check your tiles and grouting: Grotty tiles can put potential buyers off. Giving your existing wall tiles a good clean and regrouting between them is a great way to give your kitchen a well-deserved refresh without parting with your hard-earned cash. Think your tiles are beyond repair? Then it might be time to invest in some new ones or consider alternative options, like painted walls, instead.

    2. Make sure sinks and taps are secure: If your taps are wobbly or rings of dirt and residue have begun to accumulate around your sink where things aren’t properly sealed, it’s time to fix things up. The small details go a long way in creating a more positive impression of your kitchen overall.

    3. Fit new worktops: New kitchen worktops are one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to upgrade the entire look of your residential kitchen. They can increase the value of your property considerably, particularly when you opt for materials designed to stand the test of time like solid surface countertops, as they make a great long-term investment.

    4. Optimise your storage: Potential buyers like to envision what life would be like living at your property. If you can show them that your kitchen space can be both functional and stylish by adding some additional storage, it will increase the amount they are willing to invest in your home as a result. Keep it simple with neat baskets and shelving or go all out and add further kitchen cabinets if sufficient storage is currently an issue.

    5. Upgrade your appliances: Your dilapidated toaster and rusty old kettle may seem fairly innocuous, but they subconsciously influence visitors’ impressions of the value of your kitchen. Getting new electrical appliances is relatively inexpensive but it will have an impact, particularly if you ensure that everything matches.

    6. Create a new island: If your current counter space is limited or the storage solutions mentioned above didn’t quite cut it, you could always consider creating a kitchen island. Solid Surfacing Company can help you to plan for this accordingly, fabricating custom solid-surface countertops for the occasion. Your investment should pay off multiple times when it comes to reassessing the value of your property.

    7. Fix your flooring: If you have tufts of loose carpet sticking out or your laminate flooring has begun to peel, it may be time to repair or replace your flooring. There are some great, cost-effective options out there and new flooring is relatively easy to fit yourself but still constitutes a substantial upgrade. As such, it can hugely impact the value of your property, particularly when combined with new solid surface worktops.

    8. Think about lighting: Lighting is often overlooked when considering property value. Nevertheless, it is one of the most crucial factors that people look at when buying and selling homes. Create a more pleasant atmosphere with mood lighting, lamps and carefully considered light fittings for maximum impact and value.

    9. Reorganise your furniture: If your kitchen is on the larger side or you have a combined kitchen and dining room, you may wish to reorganise your furniture. The same goes for smaller studios where the kitchen makes up part of your main living space. Creating a clear distinction between zones goes a long way in increasing the value of your property.

    10. Tidy up: Never underestimate the difference that the smaller things can make. Tidying up your kitchen and ensuring that everything is clean is one of the best ways to make sure that people perceive your home in a positive light. The feeling they get when entering and leaving will ultimately determine how much they think your property is worth.
