Fundermax® laminate is more sustainable than PVC and is easy to install and clean, in addition to being scratch, graffiti, chemical and weather resistant.

Pfleiderer

The German-based manufacturer, Pfleiderer, specialises in producing Duropal high-pressure laminate (Duropal HPL), made from a combination of melamine-resin-infused décor paper layers and phenol-resin-infused core paper layers, pressed together using high-pressure chambers. The resulting material is incredibly hardwearing and temperature and impact resistant, as well as boasting hygienic, easy-to-clean properties.

Egger

Egger laminate is a popular, budget-friendly material made by applying a printed image to high-density fibreboard, covered by a robust surface overlay to protect from damage. Available in many designs, it is water resistant and made from 86% renewable materials, making it ideal for refurbishing rental properties.

FAQs

What is solid surface?

Solid surface is a type of man-made stone. Designed to mimic the properties of natural stone – with added strength and durability – it is not the same as laminate, which is simply printed to look like a natural mineral.

Corian® was the world’s first solid surface material. It was developed by DuPont scientists in 1963, with the aim of making a versatile yet visually appealing material that could outperform natural stone. When the Corian® patent expired in 1987, however, many other solid surface brands entered the market.

How is it made?

Solid surface is made using one part acrylic and two parts natural minerals. The idea is that this makes it far more versatile and easier to manipulate than marble, granite and other stone equivalents. Pigments and textured pieces can also be added to the mix for a unique colour and authentic texture.

Once the solid surface mix is complete, it is poured into a mould and left to cure, before it is cut into sheets ready for use.

What are the benefits?

Solid surface is just as hard as natural stone but is much easier to maintain. It is waterproof, non-porous and can withstand heat up to 160ºC (unlike natural stone, which is prone to heat damage).

Because solid surface is non-porous, it is hygienic and stain resistant. This means it doesn’t have to be sealed like natural stone.

As a man-made material, solid surfaces are available in a variety of unique colours. Moreover, each sheet is consistent in colour, with uniform patterning running throughout, making it easy to repair.

One of the major benefits of solid surface materials is that they are thermoformable. This means that when heat is applied, they can be moulded into any shape, including 3D designs with smooth curves. This smooth material can also be joined together seamlessly to create sleek, streamlined worksurfaces, as well as larger shapes with a continuous form.

Finally, solid surface materials are sustainable. Aluminium Trihydrate powder (ATH) is one of the main components of any solid surface mix. It is also one of the world’s most recyclable materials, meaning solid surfaces can be easily recycled into new products, in addition to being easy to repair and repurpose. Solid surface materials don’t contain any toxic products or hazardous pollutants. In fact, they have been accredited by many environmental protection bodies, including BREEAM, LEED and GreenGuard®.
