Slimline worktops are one of the hottest trends in modern kitchens today. With their sleek, contemporary style, they’ve gained the approval of interior designers worldwide. And when it comes to the perfect material, Solid Grade Laminate stands out – not only is it 100% waterproof, but it's also incredibly durable, making it ideal for high-traffic spaces. While this trend might be new, Solid Surfacing Company has been expertly crafting Solid Grade Laminate for over 30 years at our West Midlands factory. Our expertise has long been trusted across various commercial projects, from toilet cubicles and changing rooms to office desks and reception areas.

What is Solid Grade Laminate?

Also known as Compact Laminate or SGL, Solid Grade Laminate is created by layering kraft paper with thermosetting phenolic resins, then compressing them under intense heat and pressure. This process transforms the resin into a durable binding plastic, while the paper forms a tough, water-resistant sheet. Traditionally identified by its black core and decorative surfaces on both sides, SGL has evolved in recent years. Now, the core can be colour-matched to the chosen décor – whether it's white, light grey, brown, or another shade – offering even more design flexibility.

Uses and Properties

  • Waterproof worktops suitable for both indoor and outdoor kitchens
  • Ideal for bathrooms and flood-prone areas
  • Hard-wearing, stain-resistant, and moderately heat-resistant (avoid placing hot items directly from the oven on the surface without protection)
  • Available in large sheets
  • Can feature custom drainer grooves
  • Upstands and splashbacks available
  • Offered in a wide variety of decors to suit your space
  • The compact laminate kitchen worktop brands we use are Stratus and Spectra slimline

Cost

Solid Grade Laminate worktops are more affordable than stone or solid surface options, yet they come at a higher price than standard laminate due to their superior features. They are priced similarly to mid-range solid wood worktops but offer greater longevity, particularly in areas frequently exposed to water, making them a more durable choice in the long run.

We can also offer washroom colours as a cheaper alternative to compact laminate kitchen decors. The colours tend to be plain or woodgrain and always with a black edge – we’re therefore able to offer complete kitchens at a lower rate, whilst the wearability is exactly the same.
